Description
Plates in: Mare Island photograph album, pg. [5]. 1991-1149. Shows launch tied to pier; Vallejo and Napa River in background. Also have negative: no. 23,872. Steam launch "Lively" belonged to the Coast survey ship Hassler, named after the first Superintendent of the U.S. Coast Survey Ferdinand R. Hassler; was built in 1871 under the direction of engineer John Dialogue at the River Iron Works in Camden, New Jersey; decommissioned in 1895; first Coast Survey ship constructed from iron.
