Keelan. Born in Maryland, Fr. Walsh graduated from Mt. St. Mary's College at age 19 and worked two years as a timekeeper in a steel mill. He entered the first class of Maryknoll in 1912 and in 1915 became the second priest ordained in the Society. Three years later. 1918, he was assigned to Kwong Tung (present Guangdong), China. Pope Pius XI named Fr. Walsh as the first Bishop of the Vicariate of Kongmoon. He was consecrated a Bishop in 1927 at Shepherd of the Church on Sancian Island the death place of St. Francis Xavier. In 1936, Bishop Walsh was elected second Superior General following the death of Bishop James A. Walsh, the founder of Maryknoll. In 1948 he as asked to return to China to head the Catholic Central Bureau in Shanghai. In 1951 the government closed the bureau. He was arrested in 1959 and sentenced to 20 years in prison. In 1970 he was released after spending nearly 12 years in prison. -- Born in Massachusetts, Fr. Toomey came to Maryknoll in 1921 and was ordained to the priesthood on January 26, 1930. His first assignment was to Wuchow, China in 1930. In 1936 he moved to Kweilin. In 1940 his health brought him back to the United States. He returned to China briefly but eventually served the people of Hawaii. -- Born in Italy, Monsignor Romaniello came to the United States when he was five years old. He entered Maryknoll in 1917 and was ordained to the priesthood on June 17, 1928. He was assigned to Wuchow, Kweilin in 1935 where he encountered civil unrest and was forced to depart in 1951. He spent the later years of his life working with the Catholic Relief Services in Hong Kong. He became an international figure as was referred to as the "Noodle Priest" because he fed the refugees in Hong Kong with noodles made with relief supplies. -- Born in Massachusetts, Bishop Regan entered Maryknoll in 1927 and was ordained to the priesthood on January 27, 1929. He was consecrated a Bishop on April 25, 1962. He spent 22 years in South China, from 1929-1951 He was placed under house arrest in 1950 and was expelled in 1951 and returned to the United States. He began the new mission in the Philippines and served there for the rest of his life. -- Born in Missouri, Fr. Rauschenbach entered Maryknoll in 1918 and was ordained to the priesthood on June 15, 1924. He was assigned to South China, where he spent the next twenty-one years in Maryknoll's Kongmoon Vicariate. Fr. Otto used dispensaries and radio broadcasts to interest people in Christ's message. He was also responsible for many buildings, including the compound at Nanfau and hospital at Toishan. During World War II, while the entire Kongmoon Territory was encircled by the Japanese, Fr. Otto remained with his people during their time of need. On May 14, 1945, he was killed by bandits while ministering to the Christians in the area
