Photograph was edited for publication purposes This Chevrolet assembly plant opened in 1947 and produced the Chevrolet Corvair, Chevrolet Nova, Chevrolet Camaro, Chevrolet full-size models and the Pontiac Firebird. The plant was closed in 1992 after the production of Camaro and Firebird vehicles was moved to Sainte-The´re`se Assembly in Quebec. In 1998, the facility was razed and replaced with a large retail and industrial complex, known as The Plant. GM continues to operate a car-testing facility nearby. Photograph caption dated March 4, 1950 reads, "Building up the body by adding pieces to the floor is done while all move around a circular phase of the line." Seen in the photograph are just a few of the 1700 employees at the Chevrolet assembly plant in Van Nuys that produce over 300 vehicles in an eight-hour day, roughly 42 passenger cars and 15 trucks per hour.; See images #00124050 through #00124056 for all photos in this series.
