Description
This 1928 photograph shows the busy loading area of the Crystal Ice and Cold Storage Company at 1618 and 1620 R Street. Two trucks are posed for delivery in front of Southern Pacific Railroad spurs. Built in 1921-22 for $100,000, the structure was designed to produce and store ice, mainly in response to other natural ice producers that refused, over time, to sell to Crystal. At any given time, the building could hold up to 10,000 tons of ice.
