Description
This 1925 photograph shows the interior of the L Street Boxing Auditorium, located at 223 L Street. Built in 1916, the venue seated 4,000, but was known to have squeezed in 5,000 fans for major tickets. It was placed into what had been the old Baker and Hamilton warehouse. The arena, retrofit for a cost of 1,000 dollars, hosted its first event on November 18, 1916, which had 3,000 spectators watch Willie Meehan defeat Big Miller in a main event that went but three rounds. The crowd was the largest, up to that time, to view a boxing event in Sacramento.
