Original unbound manuscript pages of The Book of the East by Richard Henry Stoddard. Divided into three sections of "Persian Songs" "Tartan Songs" and "Chinese Songs." Numbers have been added to the pages by Perkins. Many of the pages have fingerprints on their reverse sides in what appears to be pencil lead or graphite. Many of the pages are handwritten, but several have printed versions of the poems pasted on, with the titles struck out either by Perkins or Stoddard himself. All stationary used has a small insignia embossed on its upper left corner, though not the same for each piece. Though the manuscript is undated, The Book of the East was first published in 1871.
