Description: Biography/History: Emma Worthington was born in Los Angeles. In 1974 she began working in a restaurant at the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and has since worked a number of different jobs there. She became a shop steward with HERE Local 814 and later a staff member, and has participated in numerous campaigns around Los Angeles and Long Beach. At the time of the interview, Emma was handling grievances on the UNITE HERE Local 11 Member Representative Team and serving on the executive board.
Scope/Content: Interview Contents: Career and experience as a rank-and-file leader in Local 11 and as a community leader — Becoming a shop steward in the late 1980s — Organizing hotel workers at the New Otani and along Century Boulevard — Fighting for a living wage for hotel workers in Long Beach and Los Angeles — Decline of African American workers in the hotel industry and work as a diversity organizer with the UNITE HERE International — Organizing during the 1992 Los Angeles rebellion — Role as a pastor and his efforts to bring faith, community, and the union together — Influence of the Reverends Martin Luther King Jr. and James Lawson Jr. on his personal and political development.
