Description
This crate label includes four kinds of fruit grown in the Santa Clara Valley: prunes, peaches, apricots, and pears. The label could be used for all four fruits by changing the name of the fruit printed in the lower left corner. The California Prune & Apricot Growers Association was formed in March 1917 for the purpose of creating stable prices and protecting the orchardist of California. In 1918 the Association built its headquarters at the intersection of Market and San Antonio Streets in San Jose, California. The operation of the Association continued over the years with varying degrees of cooperation among the growers. During the years of the Great Depression the Association persistently advocated standards of product quality and measures to achieve market stability. Eventually the Association chose the name Sunsweet as its trademark. In May 1958 the Directors chose a new name for the Association - Sunsweet Growers, Inc.
