Shades of L.A. is an archive of photographs representing the contemporary and historic diversity of families in Los Angeles. Images were chosen from family albums and include daily life, social organizations, work, personal and holiday celebrations, and migration and immigration activities. Title supplied by cataloger.; Image is a reproduction. Andrew Nizynski led an eventful life. He was born in Gdynia, Poland, in 1924 and served in the Polish Home Army in World War 2. He fought in the Warsaw Uprising of 1944 and was a prisoner of war in Germany. He went to London in 1946 and married his wife Danuta in 1949. She had also been a German POW. They came to L.A. in 1951 and raised three children. Andrew worked as an electronics engineer and computer memory systems specialist. He died in 2013 at the age of 89; Danuta died three years later. Dancers from the Krakusy Polish Folk Dance Ensemble perform the Oberek, a regional dance from Central Poland, on stage in Long Beach circa 1978.
