Photograph was edited for publication purposes. The Wayside Honor Rancho was renamed The Peter J. Pitchess Detention Center in 1983. Photograph caption dated September 14, 1959 reads "Prison mascot. Inmate coaxes tiny doe to drink her milk from bottle as she is dwarfed by cows at prison dairy. Fawn wandered into rancho, was adopted by inmates. Dairy provides milk for rancho and other county prisons. Former county supervisor Roger Jessup helped organize it into modern plant. Trucks haul milk daily from rancho." The prison is at 29310 The Old Road in Castaic. See images 00154656 through 00154664 for all photos in this series.
