Description
"John Kost's saloon on the southwest corner of 17th and H Streets was patronized for decades by Sacramentans, according to Fred E. Dosch ... owner of the photograph taken about the turn of the century. Display signs at the entrance read 'Ruhstaller's Gilt Edge Lager and Steam Beer," brewed at 12th and H Streets. A side door, at left, opened into a room used by women -- then barred from saloons -- to buy pails of beer for home use ..."
