Description
Pictured in circa 1960 are the Karl’s Shoes are 620 K Street and Breuner’s Furniture at 600 through 618 K Street. Karl’s – a chain store – had been a K Street fixture since the late-1920s while Bruener’s had been a Sacramento institution since its founding in 1856. The pictured structure had been given historic landmark status in 1962 by the Sacramento Historic Landmarks Commission. However, by the mid-1970s, the building’s days had become numbered. Demolition had started in March 1975, with the belief that excessive maintenance costs made saving the building untenable. In the distance is the old, Greco-Roman-style Bank of America building at 530 K Street.
