This interview was conducted as part of the North San Rafael History Project: From Ranches to Ranch Houses: The Growth of San Rafael’s Miller Creek & Las Gallinas Valleys, a collaboration of citizens in North San Rafael and the Anne T. Kent California Room, Marin County Free Library. Interviews were conducted with North San Rafael leaders & pioneers to document the history of the area since World War II, including citizen involvement to protect the quality of life and preserve the unique character and natural assets of the area.
A Marin resident for more than fifty years, Jean Starkweather shares recollections of her Terra Linda community and reflects on changes she’s seen in it throughout the years. The lifelong nature enthusiast recounts her experiences as an environmentalist and educational volunteer, as well as her association with many civic organizations. Jean speaks about her participation in local politics, particularly involvement with planning, open space, land use, and wetlands preservation. She articulates her philosophy about people being encouraged to take an interest in their communities.
