As Billie Jean King, she was the force behind the creation and promotion of the women's professional tour in the early 1970s, then solidified her place in feminist lore by defeating Bobby Riggs in their highly-publicized match. A pioneer gay athlete, King also served as commissioner of World Team Tennis and founding editor of "Women's Sports" magazine.
