Description
Used in the Exhibit: Play by Play - A Century of L.A. Sports Photography, 1889-1989
Long Beach Poly's Billie Jean Moffitt honed her game on the city's public courts before gaining international renown with 20 Wimbledon titles. As Billie Jean King, she was the force behind the creation and promotion of the women's professional tour in the early 1970s, then solidified her place in feminist lore by defeating Bobby Riggs in their highly-publicized match. A pioneer gay athlete, King also served as commissioner of World Team Tennis and founding editor of "Women's Sports" magazine.
