The Michigan California Company use small donkey engines (mostly 10x12) and they log only the pine trees except for their own use in bridges and other construction. The result is that the standing fir trees offer protection to fine clumps of pine reproduction and the logged over lands are left in excellent condition. Bruce spark-arresters are used and they have very few fires from the engines
