Description
Waist-length portrait. Signed by photographer and Louise Boyd.
2013-0196.
A California native, Louise Arner Boyd was an heiress and socialite who became a great Arctic explorer. Shortly after her father’s death in 1920, she took a cruise along the coast of Norway and beyond . This trip sparked her interest in the arctic regions and she soon organized her own arctic expedition, hiring experts and chartering a ship. As Louise surrounded herself with scientists, her knowledge of the region grew. Through the 1930’s, she chartered more than four arctic expeditions. She also served as the ship’s photographer. Many of these trips were sponsored by the American Geographical Society. Louise died in San Rafael, California.
