Description
Photo--black and white: The entrance to Luther Burbank's 18 acre Gold Ridge Experiment Farm on Bodega Highway in Sebastopol circa 1930's. A typed label in taped to the bottom of the photo. (See image) This gate was never left open during Mr. Burbank's lifetime, because of the intensive work going on beyond; and the few persons who did enter, did so only by the very special permission of Burbank himself. The tree to the left of the entrance is a Royal Black Walnut hybrid planted in 1885 by Burbank. A northern California and Eastern species hybrid, this walnut tree produced almost 2,000 pounds of walnuts a year and is the heaviest nut producer of any kind of tree developed. Fron 1887 to 1895 Burbank gave nuch attention to walnut trees, producing the Paradox walnut in 1893 which matured in 15 years instead of the normal 50 to 60 years.
