Image of an aerial view relief map of the seat of the American Civil War showing Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia; battleships in Atlantic Ocean, Chesapeake Bay and rivers, railroads, and symbols for cities visible; distances from notable cities noted in lower margin. "Drawn from Nature and Lith. by John Bachmann."--text, bottom left margin.
"Entered according to act of Congress in the year 1861 by John Bachmann in the Clerks Office of the District Court of the U.S. for the Southern District of New York."--text, bottom center margin.
"Published by J. Bachmann, 115 Nassau St. N.Y."--text, bottom right margin. David Rumsey notes that this view was issued to join with bird's-eye views of the Carolinas, and Florida and Georgia to form a continuous view of the eastern seaboard and its military involvement. The first edition was issued by Bachmann, and the second issue depicted smoke rising from Manassas. In this third state, issued by Magnus, the smoke has been removed and many towns and landmarks added - the nation had been at war for three years and folks saw these names in print and in letters written by husbands and sons off fighting.
