Title supplied by cataloger. Photograph caption reads, "The area's Armenian schools, churches and businesses were closed yesterday and thousands ... jammed Montebello's Bicknell Park to observe the 69th annual Commemoration of Armenian Genocide Day. Ceremonies were held worldwide to protest waht Armenians say was the slaughter of 1.5 million of their ancestors by Turks in 1915. Turkish officials never have admitted the slaughter. Some 2,000 people marched from Montebello's Holy Cross Cathedral to City Hall, then to Bicknell Park to cheer the burning of a Turkish flag. Gov. George Deukmejian, of Armenian descent, who presided over last year's ceremonies at Montebello, attended a similar gathering in Fresno yesterday, but another son of Armenia, Los Angeles County District Attorney Robert Philibosian, told the crowd in Montebello that proof of the genecide 'is in the eyes and hearts of the survivors ... in the souls of the martyrs.' In Athens, Greece, yesterday, more than 1,000 demonstrators marched to the Turkish Embassy and burned a Turkish flag outside the mission." Photograph dated April 25, 1984.
