Description
Photograph of a drawing by Edward Vischer, 1876, of a bullfight in front of Mission San Francisco de Asis (Dolores), 1842. The mission was founded 9 October 1776. Spectators on a grandstand behind a long fence, on a balcony of one of the mission buildings, and on horses in the foreground watch several picadors as they approach a bull who has downed another rider. A matador stands nearby. Several customers visit a vendor's stand which sits near a building in the right foreground. Two steers lay nearby. Pillars dominate the front of the church. A cross is at the apex of the roof of the church. Caption reads: "A reminiscense of 1842, bullfight after high mass at Mission Dolores in celebration of the Patron Saint, San Francisco de Asis", "© Vischer (1876)".
Image acquired? by C.C. Pierce around 1920.
