Description
Postcard image shows an elevated view of the Wayfarers' Chapel looking southeast with surrounding landscape. The Palos Verdes hills are visible behind the chapel. Narcissa Cox Vanderlip contributed the 3 1/2-acre site for the chapel, for which the cornerstone was dedicated on July 16, 1949. Lloyd Wright, son of the famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright, was hired to design the chapel which opened in 1951. Reverse of postcard printed with "WAYFARERS' CHAPEL / Built by the members of The Church of the New Jerusalem, Wayfarers' Chapel is a memorial to Emanuel Swedenborg, upon whose teachings regarding the Lord and The Word the New Church was founded. The Chapel was designed by Lloyd Wright to express the understanding of Christianity developed in Swedenborg's writings, wherein religion is related to life in a clear and positive manner." Fairchild Aerial Surveys Inc. was founded by Sherman Fairchild (son of IBM founder George Winthrop Fairchild), and operated until it was sold to Aero Services, Inc.
