Shades of L.A. is an archive of photographs representing the contemporary and historic diversity of families in Los Angeles. Images were chosen from family albums and include daily life, social organizations, work, personal and holiday celebrations, and migration and immigration activities. Title supplied by cataloger.; Image is a reproduction. Esther Tarica Altabet was born in 1910 on the island of Rhodes, Turkey (now Greece). This was the same year her parents, Marco and Rachel Tarica, immigrated to America with Esther and her brother. They came directly to Los Angeles via New York for better job opportunities. The family remembers that the Sephardic Jewish community was clustered in downtown L.A. but expanded throughout Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley following World War II. Esther married Mordo Ben Altabet in 1928 and had six children. She died September 2001 at the age of 90. A group portrait of members of the Peace and Progress Society taken at the Palestine Mandate Celebration near the grandstands at Exposition Park on June 27, 1920. The Peace and Progress Society was founded in Los Angeles in 1917 as a synagogue for the Spanish Sephardic community from the Island of Rhodes, which later became the Sephardic Hebrew Center in 1934.
