Description
Taken from the southwestern corner of Eight and I Streets, this photograph reveals the Doric-columned colonnade of Sacramento’s United States Post Office and Federal Building on February 26, 1935. After 1.3 million dollars in construction expenses were approved by the United States Congress in 1931, building could commence on the Classical Roman-style building. 750,000 bricks, 60,000 sacks of cement, 1,600 tons of steel framing, make up the four story building, designed by the Sacramento architecture firm of Starks and Flanders. The Post Office finally opened on November 6, 1933. Just beyond the building, and to the right of the photograph, is Sacramento’s City Hall.
