Description
Photograph of a composite of three panoramic views of Los Angeles during three different decades, ca.1923. Top image: At left is a lumberyard with stacks of processed lumber piled at the corner of the lot near the street with the y-split. Nearby, to the right of the lumberyard, is the First Episcopal Church (1st Protestant Church in Los Angeles). The church has a steep roof with a room extending from below the gable in view. Above the church, on the hill in the foreground, is the photographer S.A. Rendall. With his hands in his pockets, the thick-bearded man stands facing towards the direction of the lumberyard. In the center stands the Old Market House building. It's the rectangular building with the square clock tower in the center. To the right of the Old Market House and in the foreground is the Masonic Temple building. New High Street runs horizontally just below the grassy hill in the foreground. Center image: The city is more developed showing crowded streets and tall buildings. Vehicles are traveling on the street. Billboard signs advertise products or building names. Mountains are visible in the background. Bottom image: Tall buildings almost block the view of the horizon.
Legible signs include: center, "[...] P.K.", "50 [...] 10¢", "W.P. Fuller & Co.", "Marsh Strong building", "continental [...]", "Southern California Gas Co.", "Blackstone's, California's finest store", "Stagg [...]", "hotel [...]", bottom, "Arnold Furniture Co.", "the new Levy's café", "Grand Pacific Hotel", "Owl cigar, 5¢", "[...] Henderson Furniture Co., 724 S. Main St.", "[...] Dearden [...]", "the great house, Brent's, established 1890", "Realty Board bldg.", "we sell new upright pianos, $1.00 down, we sell the new drophead simplex sewing machines, Brent's the biggest, furniture, The o[...] complete", "Barker Bros., household and office, furnishing, office desks and filing devices, largest assortments, lowest prices, best terms", "Garland building".
