Description
This photograph of the St. Nicholas Hotel at 1118 Fourth St. was taken on Sept. 16, 1932. A seminal moment for the Sacramento Fire Department came shortly after a March 1918 fire killed four tenants at the St. Nicholas. Although a city commission determined that no blame could be placed ""on anybody in particular but rather to a combination of unusual circumstances and conditions,"" it did encourage the Fire Department to acquire both an aerial truck with a ladder and a motor-driven chemical engine, both of which would be an indispensible in urban firefighting for decades to come, not simply in Sacramento, but nationwide.
