Photograph caption dated August 17, 1960 reads, "This dramatic-looking apparatus protects equipment in Southern California Edison's Mesa Substation near Los Angeles against lightning and other short circuit breakers. Final unit of two has now been put into service. They are the highest rated of their type produced domestically. Built by General Electric Company's High Voltage Switchgear Department, they were designed especially for this application."
