Description
A teleconference created by the Sisters of the Presentation, San Francisco to educate members of their congregation located in various convents and residences throughout California about the Sanctuary Movement. The teleconference features a moderated panel discussion and call-in question and answer segment describing the conflicts and humanitarian conditions in Guatemala and El Salvador, the specific number of refugees from those countries located in the Bay Area, the social justice actions being taken by Catholic Women Religious to help support and meet the needs of those refugees, and the legal implications of Sanctuary work by religious congregations. Both segments are moderated by Sister Margaret Cafferty, PBVM, who served as Congregational Superior from 1981-1990. Panelists include: Reverend Ronald Burke, former Director of the Hispanic Apostolate, Archdiocese of San Francisco; Eileen Purcell, Catholic Social Services, Archdiocese of San Francisco; “Monica,” a member of the Committee of Central American Refugees; Marc Van Der Hout, National Lawyers Guild San Francisco Bay Area Chapter; Sister Kathleen Healy, PBVM, Sister Peter Claver, PBVM, and Dolores Ponce. The information presented in the teleconference was part of ongoing deliberations within the congregation that ultimately led to a vote on March 23, 1984 to accept the Sanctuary Covenant.
