Description
Black and white photograph featuring the canal built at Itu leper colony, run by the Church of Scotland in Calabar, southeast Nigeria. A boat powered by oarsmen with long poles can be seen in the distance. The caption to the image reads: "Canal at Itu Leper Colony - constructed to save lepers long walks to farm, Dec 1943." The leper colony included many housing areas and amenities, including a farm to provide patients with fresh food. This photograph was pasted into one of a series of exercise book albums created by Emily Godfrey, Matron of the Ama Achara Methodist Hospital.
