Description
As captured in this 1863 photograph, several rail workers stand in front of, and beside, the Central Pacific Railroad’s first depot and ticket office at Front and I Streets. It was designed in 1863 by Collis P. Huntington, and built in one afternoon at a cost of 150 dollars. The originally-planned depot would have cost the frugal Huntington an estimated 12,000 dollars. The building was also used for storing tools, plus it boasted a vise and a small forge. The station was replaced in 1867, but the original structure stood until 1908.
