Title supplied by cataloger. Alexander's Markets grocery store chain founded by Samuel H. Alexander opened the first store in 1920s Los Angeles. During the 1940s through the early 1960s the company expanded into suburban areas around Los Angeles under the management of Samuel H. Alexander's brother, Robert E. Alexander. By the end of the 1960s Alexander's Markets began to fold due largely to competition from corporate supermarket chains. Alexander's Markets closed its last store remaining store, located in La Canada in 1976. Photograph caption dated May 21, 1965 reads, "Everything's Ducky. Housewives check out fresh Long Island oven ready ducks on sale this week at area Alexander's Markets. The ducks, selling at 49 cents a pound, were flown in especially for the sale from the east coast by American Airlines jet to maintain the market's policy of providing fresh poultry to customers."
