Photograph caption dated April 23, 1963 reads "Mary Rings, 17, Van Nuys actress, pins the first poppy on Pete Kopchik, poppy chairman of North Hollywood Post 1040, Veterans of Foreign Wars, as Don Gratner, post commander, approves. Actual sale of 'buddy poppies' will be held May 24-25 to finance the VFW Fund for disabled veterans and their dependents. More than 1,000 VFW members will attempt to sell 20,000 poppies in the Valley."
