His work as a publicist on the film Love Story (1970) inspired him to write the book The Love Story Story, which allowed him to move to Hollywood to begin a career in screenwriting. Since then he has written several novels and screenplays and worked steadily as a director. He wrote both the novel and film adaptation of Sherlock Holmes story The Seven-Per-Cent Solution (1976), wrote and directed Time After Time (1979), and his vision as director of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan is credited with reinvigorating the Star Trek franchise.
