Forty children and their schoolmistress are arranged in four rows on the steps in front of their clapboard-sided schoolhouse. Six boys are seated in the first row, the leftmost of which is barefoot. The rest of the rows are standing, two of which stand along the front steps. The school teacher is pictured in the top row to the far right. The class is divided evenly between boys and girls.
