Photograph caption dated March 19, 1964 reads, "Presented trophies in the Valley Optimist International Oratorical Contest by local chairman Donald F. LaPenna are, from left, Dave Dugan, 15, Sherman Oaks, first-place winner; Ted Lucia, 14, Sherman Oaks, who placed second, and Jay Segal, 14, North Hollywood, third-place winner. This year's subject was 'Optimism - Formula for Freedom.' The winner of the contest finals, to be held in Denver June 14 to 18, will receive a $1,000 scholarship."
