Description
Charles Handy article comparing the success of the small business orientation in Italy to the tendencies of large corporations in Britain, and how the Italian practice keeps businesses both wealthy and human. Handy begins the article discussing how the draw of Europe is in its differences, and how part of the opportunity in Europe is the chance for countries to learn from their immediate neighbors. He specifically focuses on Italian business culture and practices, particularly as they contrast with that of Britain, arguing that Italians have a deep distrust of institutions, such as large business firms, and prefer exclusive relationships and organizations that revolve around family. Nepotism is what enables Italians to advance in their society, and the emphasis on family relationships even extends to financing a loan for a home. Handy proceeds to contrast Italian business practices with those of Britain, which, he states, will never be like those in Italy, noting that family businesses are perceived by the British as traps from which to escape. However, Handy notes that the British should perhaps consider questioning the British penchant for large, depersonalized businesses and institutions, and treating people as cogs in a machine, rather than as individuals. He concludes his analysis stating that the youngest and most talented will not tolerate being treated impersonally, and adds that the times are moving with such younger workers and their expectations and demands. In this sense, the Italian way may prove the most appropriate model for future business practices and attitudes.
