Used in the Exhibit: Play by Play - A Century of L.A. Sports Photography, 1889-1989. Gail Goodrich was considered too small for college and too frail for the pros, but the 6-foot-1 guard proved everyone wrong. After leading L.A. Polytechnic High to the city title in 1961, Goodrich helped Wooden earn his first two NCAA titles (1964, 1965). A southpaw with a sweet outside shot, he was the leading scorer on the Lakers' 1972 championship team. When L.A. traded Goodrich to the New Orleans Jazz toward the end of his career, he again proved useful: one of the draft picks the Lakers obtained for Goodrich was used to select Earvin "Magic" Johnson. Photograph caption dated December 12, 1964 reads, "Gail Goodrich of UCLA attempts block of out-of-bounds pass by University of Arizona's Dennis Dariman. Goodrich paced Bruin win with 23 points in 107-76 victory."
