Description
Photograph of an exterior view of a nuclear energy plant in the Santa Susana Mountains, ca.1950. To the right, a large building with no visible windows sits among a cluster of smaller buildings. To the left, small rudimentary buildings with rectangular windows sit scattered about. A tangle of devices sits in the middle of the large building on the right and the smaller buildings on the left. A rocky hillside is visible behind the buildings while care can be seen parked in the left background.
Photoprint reads: "Electricity from Atomic Energy -- heat produced by the atomic energy reactor (in building at right) is used to gnerate electricity. The reactor is part of the sodium reactor experiment (SRE) being conducted by Atomics International, a division of North American Aviation, Incorporated for the Atomic Energy Commission to develop economical power from nuclear energy. Electricity is generated by an experimental power station installed adjacent to the reactor by the Southern California Edison Company (left). The project is located in the Santa Susana Mountains near Los Angeles".
