Description
Photograph of soldiers in the streets of San Francisco following the earthquake, 1906. A group of soldiers is gathered at center in a rubble-filled street. They are wearing dark uniforms and broad-brimmed hats, and many are wearing long cats. Several civilians are visible in the foreground at right. Two horses can be seen in the background at center. Behind the people, the burned-out frame of a large building is visible. Most of the second floor is missing and the walls of another building can be seen through hole in the walls. The soldiers were called to action when martial law was declared in the city in response to the earthquake and fire.
