Description
An issue titled as: From a Nisei who said "no." The account describes life experience and viewpoints which lie behind one young man's "no" answer to Question 28 of the Army registration form. The question was submitted to all male incarcerated citizens in February, 1943. The account collects notes of the exchange between a young Nisei and the Hearing Board authorized to pass upon questions of segregation. The collection contains material used by Carey McWilliams in writing the book, Prejudice: Japanese Americans, symbol of racial intolerance (Little, Brown, 1944). It includes U.S. War Relocation Authority records, confidential reports, bibliographies, clippings and compilations of articles, legal papers, correspondence between McWilliams and Japanese American evacuees, relocation camp newspapers and other publications, two copies of his book, and five copies of the 1994 videocassette (40 min.), Something Strong Within.
