Description
This collection is comprised of approximately 1,000 slides capturing buildings along Wilshire Boulevard. The slides were taken during Tuesday afternoon walks in 1978-1979 by Marlene Laskey and her 15-year-old daughter, Annie, who was the primary photographer. Marlene (1933-1989) was a Michigan native who moved to Los Angeles in the 1950s and became a Los Angeles historian and architecture enthusiast. At the time of her death from cancer, Marlene was working on a Master of Urban Planning degree at UCLA, and was an interviewer for UCLA's Oral History program.; Title supplied by cataloger; The highest resolution available for this image is 300 dpi.
Looking northwest across Wilshire Boulevard, just east of where it intersects with S. Norton Avenue. The United of America Building is seen on the right; Perino's, the once highly popular dining spot, and the Spanish style Los Altos Apartments are seen in the center. Designed by Paul Williams, this was the second and last structure for Perino's, which closed in 1986. After the restaurant was torn down in 2005, a 4-story, 47-unit apartment building was built in its place. Built in 1926 by Edward B. Rust and Luther Mayo in a Mission Revival style, Los Altos was originally developed as a "co-op", but went bankrupt during the Great Depression. In 1999, the structure received a design award from the California Preservation Foundation and was added to the National Register of Historical Places - Building #99000765; it is Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument #311.
