Description
Nationalist/Republican mural, Ardoyne Avenue, Ardoyne, 2009. Mural commemorating Flight of the Earls (1607); 'The Flight of the Earls Imeacht na nlarlaí[.] I ndiaidh 400 bliain [After 400 years] ...that the eternal values of liberty and democracy have prevailed and the sons and daughters of the Planter and the Gael have found a way to share the land of their birth and live together in peace'; image represents right, Hugh O'Neill, Earl of Tyrone, and left, Rory O'Donnell, Earl of Tyrconnell, reading the news that 'Chichester Appointed Lord Deputy in Ireland'; flight ship in background. The Flight of the Earls took place in 1607 after the decisive victory of English forces at Kinsale in 1601; it is considered one of the turning points in Irish history. Plaques to side read: 'This project has been funded through the Re-imaging Communities Programme which is supported by the Shared Communities Consortium'; list of funding bodies; 'This mural project was officially opened by the President of Ireland Mary McAleese 19th of June 2009' (McAleese was born in Ardoyne).
