Description
The photographer's notes that accompanied this photo state: "The remoteness of Tule River Indian Reservation and the absence of recreational facilities make it difficult for Indian youngsters to interact - - except during school hours - - with non-Indian children. The lifestyle of the reservation makes it hard for people reared on reservations to adjust to close-living arrangement of urban centers. Consequently, while many families live without conveniences American take for [granted], the people find a special security in the remoteness of reservation life. Some homes at Tule still are without indoor plumbing or toilet facilities. Water must be heated on top of stoves for baths and other functions often means midnight creeps to outdoor toilets that do not have electrical lighting, heating or plumbing."
