Photograph article dated November 14, 1963 reads, "Does rain hurt cactus plants? Raid water is soft water and is good for all plants if proper drainage is provided. Joe Rand, cactus expert, says sandy soil suits cacti best. He has one of the largest cactus collections this side of the dessert, but it has been a little rough getting the place ready for the hoped-for customers. Joe moves slowly because one foot is twisted. Ineligible for regular employment, he none the less insists on earning his own living... Everyone's invited to look at the many thousands of plants at his new cactus nursery, 11319 Cumpston St., near Lankershim Blvd."
