Arthur Lubin was born in Los Angeles on July 25, 1898. He was an American film director and producer known for directing "Phantom of the Opera (1943)," several Abbott & Costello films, "Francis the Talking Mule" series and created the popular television series Mister Ed. Lubin also acted in several silent films. A prominent director for Universal Pictures in the 1950s, he directed over 60 films. He died on May 12, 1995. Photograph caption dated February 16, 1961 reads "'Know what you're to say?--HM? Speak up! Speak up!--You're not trying!'.
