The California National Bank was organized in 1882 as the California State Bank and helmed by Norman Rideout, a local banker since 1850 who was known to ride shotgun on gold deliveries from the mines to Sacramento. The heavy brick structure on the corner of Fourth and J Streets featured on this circa 1940 brown-toned penny postcard was completed in 1890 and housed the exclusive Sutter Club on the top floor.
