Overview from 36th Street and Carolina Place, facing east. This view looks over the majority of the port, all the way to the Port of Long Beach. Numerous apartment complex rooftops fill the forefront of the photo, and toward the center several marinas are visible. To the right is the LAXT berth where coal and coke ships load and unload their cargo. Los Angeles Export Terminal (LAXT) opened with much fanfare in 1997. Its future, for now, seems to be in petroleum coke, which is collected from the area's refineries, and shipped to Japan for use in steel and cement making. Photograph dated June 2001.
