Description
Photograph of a view of a 1901-model Victor automobile in a parking lot near a Safeway store(?), ca.1935. The car is visible at center facing to the left. It resembles a true "horseless carriage" with four large wooden-spoked wheels and a pair of lanterns that appear to belong on a stage coach. It has a cloth top over the single bench seat, and there is a running board integrated into the fenders over the wheels. It was the first American automobile to feature a folding top. It had two speeds and the top speed was 18 miles per hour. It is cranked on the right side of the gas tank and gas control is done through twisting the steering lever. Gear shifting and clutch control were handled by a lever below the steering rod. There is a service brake. This particular vehicle was built by A. W. Overman in Chicopee, Mass. and used for about six years. It was then stored until 1936 when it was purchased by Seymore W. Litt and Aron Orexk(?) of 1218 E. Florence Avenue and put into service again.
