Description
Six snapshots (processed February 21, 1927) of Gus Hunter and George Bray in a small motorboat, as they attempt to navigate upstream on either the Coyote Creek or the Guadalupe Creek. Two news clippings accompany the photos: "Creek Navigators Reach Brokaw Road: San Jose's foremost creek navigators, George Bray, captain, and Gus Hunter, first mate, attempted to reach the Santa Cruz mountains yesterday by piloting a launch equipped with an out-board motor up the Guadaloupe creek. The daring seamen, or rather creekmen, reach a point 200 yards above the bridge on Brokaw road before they were forced to ship astern and return to Alviso, the embarking point. The two men left Alviso at 9:30 in the morning and were forced to start the return trip at 1:30 in the afternoon. The return trip, a distance of eight miles, was made in an hour and a half. Not only did the water grow shallow where the boat was turned, but the willows were extremely thick and blocked the channel." "To Attempt Trip Up Coyote Today: Declaring they'll pilot the first ocean-going vessel to the very gates of San Jose, George Bray and Gus Hunter of the San Jose Dairy Supply company will turn the nose of their little outboard-motored skiff up the Coyote creek from Alviso at 9:30 o'clock this morning. Friends of the pair say it can't be done, that the stream's flowing too swiftly, and the little motor lacks sufficient power to buck the current. But Messrs. Bray and Hunter say they can make the grade, and have completed all preparations for their inland voyage."
