Description
Photograph of an engraving depicting the celebration that occurred in San Francisco when California was admitted to the Union, after 1850. There is a large crowd gathered to watch a parade, which is led by a float pulled by a team of six horses and ridden by a group of people. A group of uniformed horsemen is watching the parade from the bottom right corner. The parade is starting to pass in front a building with a sign that reads "El Dorado", but the bulk of it remains in front of a long series of buildings whose facades are dominated by marble columns. In the background, the "City Hotel" sign and building can be seen. Originally, the image was dated by 1849. However, California officially joined the Union in September 9, 1850.
