Description
Photograph caption dated May 25, 1961 reads "Robert J. Parks, center, Caltech Jet Propulsion Laboratory's planetary program director, told a meeting of San Fernando Valley Future Engineers of America Wednesday night that 'Mariner-A,' a 1,000-pound spacecraft capable of flying within 17,000 miles of cloud-shrouded Venus, 'will be launched late next year.' The spacecraft will store information and transmit it back to earth from a distance of 26,000,000 miles, he said. Listening to Parks are Timothy J. Townsend, president of the Future Engineers, left, and Robert D. Halem, vice president. The group's meeting was held at Valley Colonial House, 4810 Whitsett Ave., North Hollywood." The two younger men are holding an award that reads "Seymour, Presented to the most active chapter, FEA, Valley Council."
